A home for native species
The reserve is in the second generation of the regeneration process, covered with many natives including kanuka, kowhai, rewarewa, tanekaha, rimu, totara, miro, nikau and ponga.
The Karetoto inlet was used by both Māori and European settlers, and historically, the land was known for its fertility and growing kumara. The inlet is a common nesting spot for land and shore birds, and sea creatures that enjoy muddy water.
